There are many ways to travel, in the City of Dallas; some more efficient than others. But if you want to reduce emissions and help clean our air, check out the transportation alternatives available in our city. You’ll save gas and avoid searching for a parking space! You may even get a little more exercise and improve your health!
City fleet
The City of Dallas purchased its first alternative fueled vehicle in 1992. Today, we have the largest alternative-fueled fleet in Texas and one of the largest in the country. About 41 percent of our vehicles, a total of 2,000, operate on alternative fuel (compressed natural gas, biodiesel, hybrid gasoline-electric). Electric vehicles will soon become part of our fleet too!
Biking routes and hiking trails
The City of Dallas Trail Master Plan calls for 230 miles of multi-use hike and bike trails. The trail system will link to the DART light rail stations, green belts, schools, business centers, and parks. Additionally, the City has 1,000 lane miles on the bicycle commuter system which local groups helped design. Check out the new City of Dallas Bike Plan for more information. You can also visit BikeFriendlyDallas.org, a website brought to you by a diverse group of bicyclists from across the city and within its neighborhoods to create awareness and publicize bicycle related news and information.
