Green Buildings
Did you know that all phases of buildings—building design, construction, materials and operation—consume more energy than any other part of the economy?
That’s why green buildings are so important! Green buildings save energy and water while lowering greenhouse gas emissions and waste output.
As of summer 2009, the City has now completed 17 green facilities since its Green Building Program was adopted in 2003 and has another 22 in various stages of design and construction. Of our current green buildings, we are also proud to have completed the certification process on several, boasting 4 LEED Gold, 5 LEED Silver and 1 Certified building. In addition, the City continues to upgrade its many existing buildings with various green features.
Dallas became one of the first major cities in the nation to pass comprehensive green building standards for both residential and commercial construction (Summary of Ordinance Requirements: Privately-owned Buildings ). Phase I of the Green Building Ordinance went into effect on October 1, 2009; Phase II begins October 2011.

What Makes a Building Green?
There are industry standards for what constitutes a green building. The City of Dallas uses the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Rating System for its own buildings and commercial construction. The City accepts LEED, Green Built North Texas, Green Point, Green Communities or approved equivalent standards for residential construction.
