Sustainability Brown Bag on the Use of Geothermal Energy in Texas
12 pm to 1:30 pm
Presenter: Rick Horvath
Dallas City Hall, 1500 Marilla St. L1FN Conference Room C
Geothermal power is energy generated by heat stored beneath the Earth's surface. It offers a number of advantages over traditional fossil fuel based sources as the energy harnessed is clean and safe for the surrounding environment. The ability to cool and heat homes using these ground source heat pumps is a way to use the ground temperatures right below us to offset the normal electrical needs. Currently in the U.S there is over 7000 MWt of energy offset by geo-exchange systems. Texas also has the capacity to generate electricity from existing oil/gas wells that are producing fluids and refracturing them to increase water production. In Texas, thousands of wells produce fluids over 200°F, in fact some of the south Texas wells have fluids over 400°F. Using these resources, the state of Texas has potential to generate renewable electricity from geothermal energy in the near future.
